FIELD NOTES

Understanding Unix time

Unix time counts elapsed seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970. JavaScript commonly uses milliseconds, while many APIs and databases use seconds.

A timestamp identifies a moment; a displayed calendar time also depends on a timezone. ISO and UTC output help make that distinction explicit.
